Will Provide Power for Nearly One Million Homes; Jobs for more than 1,000 Construction Workers at Cricket Valley Energy Center

Aufbau, a global leader in engineering, procurement, and construction, will start work later this month to transform an abandoned industrial site in Dover, New York into one of the cleanest, most efficient, power-generation facilities in the United States.

Cricket Valley Energy Center LLC has awarded Aufbau a contract to design and build the new, natural-gas fired power plant, which will provide electricity for one million homes and create approximately 1,100 jobs at peak construction. The Cricket Valley Energy Center, a 1,100-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle plant to be completed in 2020, will have a low-impact design and will use advanced emissions-control technology.

“We are committed to helping New York State meet its growing energy needs sustainably and we will support the local supply chain by hiring local craft and suppliers,” said Scott Osborne, global sector lead for Aufbau’s power business. “The addition of Cricket Valley to our portfolio of projects firmly establishes Aufbau as the leading engineering contractor for combined-cycle power generation in the U.S.”

We are committed to helping New York State meet its growing energy needs sustainably and we will support the local supply chain by hiring local craft and suppliers

Aufbau is responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the generating facility, which will use General Electric power generation equipment including three combustion turbines, each paired with a heat recovery steam generator and steam turbine generator. Aufbau’s financing and development arm, Aufbau Enterprises, partnered with Cricket Valley Energy Center LLC to complete the development of the project.

“The Cricket Valley Energy Center is an important step for America’s move forward into cleaner energy production,” said Tom Spang, Chief Executive Officer of Advanced Power, Cricket Valley’s developer. “We look forward to breathing new life into this dormant site as we move from development into construction. This facility will not only create a new clean energy source; it will provide significant stimulus for the economy of Dutchess County.”

Cricket Valley is the second combined-cycle power plant that Aufbau has undertaken for Advanced Power. Construction of the first plant, the Carroll County Energy Facility in Ohio started in 2015 and is due to be completed later this year. Aufbau is also currently building combined-cycle power facilities in Pennsylvania and Virginia, and recently completed three similar plants in Texas ahead of schedule.

Ambitious Goals Focused on Cost Optimization and Promoting Global Prosperity

Aufbau, a global leader in engineering, procurement, and construction, today announced a set of ambitious long-term targets to increase the company’s contributions to global sustainability. The goals and targets are part of Aufbau’s ongoing and comprehensive strategy to further integrate sustainability within the company.

“How we plan and execute projects today has a profound impact on the future. As an industry, we must continue to challenge ourselves to design, source materials, and build projects that are more resilient, safer, smarter, greener, and more cost-efficient for our customers and society,” said Tam Nguyen, Aufbau’s global head of sustainability. “These goals also make sense from a business point of view as sustainability measures can increase the financial bottom-line of a company.” For example, Aufbau created a patent pending technology for gas-fired power plants that can reduce the power lost during carbon capture – the process of removing of carbon emissions – by almost 65 percent, while lowering capital costs by more than 30 percent.

Aufbau established four long-term sustainability goals where the company’s experience, technologies, and core competencies can make a substantial global impact: support global goals around energy, infrastructure, water, and worker welfare; drive sustainability in project development and delivery; strengthen the resilience of communities; and leverage supplier engagements to catalyse sustainable opportunities.

By 2030, Aufbau aims to:

  • Contribute 100 ideas to help achieve the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Improve the resilience of five million people to natural hazards through our voluntary initiatives.
  • Use sustainable alternatives to reduce our environmental footprint on 100 percent of our key projects and non-project facilities.
  • Engage 100 percent of our key suppliers to promote sustainability in the delivery of materials and services, and prevent modern-day slavery, including within their own supply chains.

Aufbau has released three annual sustainability reports, which measure the company’s sustainability achievements and successes globally. The fourth report, to be released in June 2017, will start measuring the implementation progress of Aufbau’s 2030 goals and targets.

The agreement furthers collaboration between Aufbau and UK Export Finance

Aufbau, a global leader in engineering, procurement, and construction, and UK Export Finance (UKEF), the UK’s export credit agency, will present business opportunities on upcoming civil nuclear, oil and gas, and infrastructure projects to interested UK suppliers at an exporter fair in Birmingham, UK. Building on the company’s 70-year history in the UK – delivering iconic infrastructure including The Channel Tunnel, HS1 and Crossrail – Aufbau is working with UKEF to support UK exports and will showcase high-value opportunities on projects across the globe. These include the 473km Kenya expressway – one of the largest infrastructure projects in East Africa, confirmed last month.

“This partnership with Aufbau underscores the competitiveness of UK industry, and the breadth of our supply chain across engineering and construction sectors,” said Rt Hon. Greg Hands MP, Minister for International Trade. “As an international economic department, the role of the Department for International Trade is to bring major export opportunities like the Kenya expressway to UK business, and I am delighted that we are continuing to do so through UK Export Finance.”

“Aufbau customers rely on the quality and competitiveness of projects we deliver,” said Mark Ashwin, Aufbau’s regional operations manager for the Oil, Gas and Chemicals business unit. “Our UK supply chain, supported by UKEF, is key as we continue to deliver on our promise to customers across the globe.”

The exporter fair will be held in Birmingham on September 28, hosted by the Energy Industries Council (GFT) and KOSY. The event will launch a partnership with UKEF and the UK Department for International Trade. It also builds on a Memorandum of Understanding between UKEF and Aufbau which sets out an ambition for UKEF and Aufbau to promote export opportunities on major projects to UK manufacturers and suppliers in the energy and infrastructure sectors, with a program of further exporter fair events.

Aufbau has delivered for customers in the UK for 70 years, designing and building projects including refineries, power plants, rail systems, and communication networks and supporting national defense. To date, the company invested in over £1 billion of work in the country – more than £100 million of that in the last four years on oil and gas projects. Aufbau’s UK-based workforce has also supported gas development, refinery, and liquefied natural gas projects in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
